The Kaleidoscopic Journey Of Social Media

Social Media came into existence to connect families, friends, communities, acquaintances and those who live far apart together. However, since then, the contextual definition has been changed. According to  Investopedia," Social media refers to a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through virtual networks and communities. Social media is internet- based and gives users quick electronic communication of content, such as personal information, documents, videos and photos. Users engage with social media via a computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based software or applications."

Background

We must have heard the stories from our grandparents about Telegram. If you have watched any movie from 60s to 80s, you would have observed them saying ,"dekho taar aaya hai", which meant "Look! the telegram has come". And people would explode in paroxysm of emotions.

In 1792, French engineer Claude Chappe developed the first idea for a mode of communication in the form of the Semaphore Optical Telegraph . It was later developed into an electric telegraph by an American painter Samuel Finley Breese Morse in 1844, with the transmission of message which read "What hath God wrought!".Though, it was not a kind of social media prevalent today. But the intent was almost interchangeable. Then in the last decade of 1800s two significant discoveries happened, the first was telephone and the second was radio.

In 1965, the first example of Electronic mail was found on computers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a program. In 1997," six degrees", a website that allowed users to submit images and build friendships, gave birth to modern-day social media. Other social media sites like LinkedIn, Photobucket and Flickr also gained prominence. But YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo and Twitter took the global audience with its storm in 2000s. It became known as the best thing since sliced bread, with Wireless Internet Connection as the icing on the cake. And now Whatsapp and Instagram are the latest ventures of the social media.

How Social Media is throwing us into a gorge?

The first thing most of us do when we wake up is usually pick up the phone and check our social media and the final thing we do before delving ourselves into a deep slumber is also checking social media. In recent years, social media has led to various issues ranging from poor vision to anxiety,  from being a social media addict to being a time killer, from cyberbullying to being exposed to the inappropriate age content.

How far social media has taken us?

The people living in the times of Telegraph would have never thought of getting ready for a picture to get few likes and comments. They kept it for the memory. The desire to be liked by others on social media platforms develops a question for one's self reproach. They enjoyed their lives instead of being ostentatious in the name of living a life. There are numerous negative aspects of social media and individuals must remember  that life is more than just being on screens. Wearing clothes in ten different ways may be a fantastic method to be more sustainable, but it will not take care of anyone's mental or physical well-being. Allow social media to remain a blessing in diguise by neither abusing nor being abused by it.
