Celebrating the Big Day: PM Modi's Plea for 'Vocal for Local' Weddings

In a recent address, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reconsider their preference for foreign destination weddings and instead choose to celebrate their special moments within the country. The appeal calls for a shift in personal choices. It aligns with the government's 'Vocal for Local' mission, encouraging citizens to contribute to the nation's economy by supporting local businesses and industries. The Prime Minister emphasized that hosting weddings and other events in India would promote the country's rich culture and heritage and create opportunities for local artisans, caterers, and other service providers. By celebrating life's special moments locally, citizens can play an active role in strengthening the nation's economy and contributing to its growth.

The Economic Impact of Indian Weddings

Weddings in India have always been significant cultural events that unite families and communities. However, they have also recently significantly contributed to the national economy. According to a survey by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the period between November 23 and December 15 is expected to witness around 35 lakh weddings nationwide, providing a substantial economic boost to the wedding industry. This sector has grown tremendously recently, expanding beyond traditional ceremonies and encompassing various services, including hospitality, clothing, jewellery, event planning, and more. The evolution of the Indian wedding industry has created diverse business opportunities, generating substantial revenues and driving economic growth. In 2021, CAIT estimates predict that there will be a staggering 38 lakh weddings in the country, generating an estimated business of Rs 4.74 lakh crore ($51 billion) in the leading retail sector. This marks a significant increase from the previous year, where approximately Rs 3.75 lakh crore was generated from 32 lakh weddings during the same period. These numbers reflect the growing trend of big, lavish weddings in India and the increasing demand for high-end services and products in the wedding industry.

Destination Weddings: A Trending Extravagance

In recent years, there has been a growing trend among affluent Indian families to host destination weddings at international locations. This trend is fueled by the rise in the number of individuals in India with a net worth of $100 million or more. According to a recent study, these high-net-worth individuals are projected to reach 19,119 in the next five years, a significant increase of over 58% from the previous year's count of 12,069. The trend of destination weddings has become increasingly popular among Indian families due to the desire to make weddings more memorable and unique. Exotic locations such as Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka, Turkey, the Middle East, Portugal, Budapest, and Italy in Europe are among the most popular international wedding destinations for Indians.

However, hosting a grand and extravagant affair abroad can come at a steep cost. Hosting a two-day celebration at a top-tier Indian destination can range from $365,706 to $609,510. Hosting the same wedding at a foreign location could easily double or even triple these costs. Nonetheless, destination weddings continue to grow as Indian families seek to create memorable experiences for their loved ones.

PM Modi's Call for 'Vocal for Local' Weddings

The trend of foreign destination weddings has increased for quite some time. However, Prime Minister Modi's recent appeal to reconsider this trend has brought to light the economic implications of this extravagance. He has asked, "Is a foreign wedding necessary?" Controlling the idea that only international festivities can make a wedding grand is possible. The Prime Minister's appeal carries significant weight, not just culturally but also economically. If the people heed his call and opt for weddings within the borders of India, it could translate into significant economic dividends for the nation. By supporting local businesses in the wedding industry, from saree vendors to caterers, the soon-to-be-weds can contribute to the country's economic fabric while fulfilling their milestones. The decision to have a wedding within the country may not just be a financial one but also a celebration of the 'Vocal for Local' values that the Prime Minister has been advocating. As the wedding season approaches, the choices made by soon-to-be-weds could echo beyond personal preferences and become a powerful testament to the resilience and vibrancy of India's local economy. By choosing to celebrate within the country's borders, the people can show their support for local businesses and contribute to the nation's economic growth.
