How to give a perfect interview

Do you have an interview coming up? No worries. Everyone searches “how to give a perfect interview” once in their life before giving one and it’s right to do so as preparation comes in handy while facing the questions. But are you prepared? What all needs to be kept in mind while entering the room? Do you speak less or more? Do you maintain professional or natural?

Interviews can be overwhelming, especially the ones we would love to get hired for.  Interviews help us expand our reach by meeting new people, some highly professional. We present ourselves and brand ourselves with our abilities and skills. By definition, an Interview is a one-one conversation between the interviewer and interviewee. In simpler terms, an interview is an unstructured or structured conversation between one participant who asks questions and the other participant who answers those questions. But if we were to ask someone who has experience in giving interviews or either a fresher who doesn’t, they would define interviews as nerve-wracking, high performance and an anxious activity.

And we agree! 

But if given full preparation, confidence and a positive attitude is the most convenient activity to be engaged in before entering into the corporate or professional world as this helps in understanding the people, post and the organization prior we end up choosing something which we might regret later. The main problem which arises while giving an interview is the limited time duration and the constraints to the performance that it brings. This also brings in some consequences to the application of the interviewee and the result of it. Henceforth, some things should be kept in mind while giving an interview so that the purpose of it does not get vitiated.

On-time arrival:

Being punctual is a habit that should be inculcated in our everyday life too. Arriving 15 minutes early to the destination or 5 minutes early in front of the laptops would give you time to relax and settle down.

Dressing appropriately:

Whether it’s a virtual interview, a face-to-face one or over the call, a first impression always sets the mark. From the minute we enter or turn on our camera till the moment we end and exit, the first impression remains the last. So always dress up well and professionally.

Maintain proper body composure:

Body language speaks high volumes. It is necessary to sit in the right position whether you are giving the interview physically or virtually. Sit straight, while leaning forward. This shows that they have your full attention. Do not speak loudly, nor play with your hair or pen. Don’t fidget and swing your legs as this would show your nervousness.

Answer to point:

Most of the interviews end up with the interviewee feeling underperformed. That happens because of the time constraints that each interview has. It is recommended to answer on point and not exaggerate. Listen to the question properly and ask the interviewer to repeat if not clear on the question.

Answer with “I don’t know”, if not know the answer:

The interviewers don’t mind hearing that you don’t know the answer. Honesty and the dedication to learn about it fall into consideration. It is also a good idea to tell the interviewer that you could search on the topic and give your answers. Don’t lie or bluff.


 Remember to wear confidence in your body language too! Confidence is a success but overconfidence is a downfall. Professionalism should be maintained and modesty and truth should be seen behind one’s speech. When talking always maintain eye contact. Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake or a solid salutation.

Researching about the company/organisation:

The second thing that marks importance is knowing where you stand in the company’s believes and goals. Researching the company and focusing on providing better ideas for its implementation is always a good idea. Make sure you don’t talk too much about yourself but about what you could give to the position and the company.

Be prepared:

As the time limit is less, avoiding no or yes answers but engaging in a question round with your interviewer would show the signs of confidence and the true abilities and the information that you possess. Interviewers tend to normally start by asking basic questions, it is always beneficial to prepare beforehand such questions where you could portray more confidence and show off your ease in handling questions. A candidate must know the skill set required and should polish them and present them as an asset to the interviewer, if done so there shall be no harm in getting on board with the hiring team. Keep an eye on the environment, interest and body language of the panel.

End the interview on a positive note:

 Ending the interview doesn’t mean the judgment criteria ends too. Some follow-up steps must be taken to show your interest in the position. Feedback is the best assertion! After the day of the interview send in a follow-up message showing your gratitude for having a chance at the position also mentioning the feedback about the interviewers.


The interview ends when we feel we are done and have given our best. Not when the questions are over. It’s not a battle against the company but a battle against ourselves and the competition around us. The last best advice is to just be yourself as you would not want to be qualified for something that hinders your growth in the future. How you fare in the interview depends on how you present yourself. There is a lot of competition around us but what helps us get selected is what makes us different from the others. Skills might be common in a lot of people but what makes a person different is how they radiate their aura, charm and personality. No matter how big the post or the company/organisation is, every person has to face the same question from the interviewee. Just remember to be your best self and a confident body!
