International Mountain Day – December 11, 2022

Women move mountains is the suggested theme for 2022

Mountains are among the most fascinating earth science options our planet offers. As clear proof of the huge changes below our planet's surface, mountains have simultaneously served as playgrounds and places of worship for infinite generations of humans. Something that has been so important to so many people and cultures over millennia deserves to be remembered. Thus, on December 11, we have a tendency to celebrate International Mountain Day!

International Mountain Day 2022 is a chance to push gender equality and contribute to social justice, livelihoods, and resilience. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2002 the International

Year of Mountains, and December 11, 2003, was designated as International Mountain Day. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) coordinates the annual celebration of the day to foster greater awareness of mountain issues.

Mountains house 15% of the world's population and are home to roughly half of the world's biodiversity hotspots. They supply a fresh way of life to half of humanity. Unfortunately, mountains are under threat from climate change and overexploitation. Because the international climate continues to warm, mountain individuals—a number of the world’s poorest—face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures together mean that mountain glaciers are melting at new rates, providing fresh water downstream for numerous people.

This downside affects us all. We have a tendency to think we should cut back on our carbon footprint and beware of those natural treasures.

The increasing attention to the importance of mountains led the world organization to declare 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains. The primary international day was celebrated for the first time in the subsequent year, 2003.
