In a nation such as ours which has yet a long journey to cover before it can claim to be a developed nation and which has the world’s largest growing population not to mention the obstacles of poverty and unemployment it becomes essential that policy makers take active steps towards making our education system and jobs knowledge centric. It is imperative to delve further into the context which knowledge here touches before we dive into how knowledge centric development can fill the vacuum which now exists with regard to employment and skilled labor.
Knowledge in the context being used here is an essential pre-requisite before performing a certain task and consists of facts, information, skills, technical know-how and prior experience about that task gained from other people. Thus knowledge here is a valuable insight and a tool which improves our efficiency, upgrades our performance, supports us in performing that task and gives us a much better result or outcome than we would have got without it.
Knowledge centric Approach focuses on using explicit and tactic (knowledge gained from personal experience) knowledge as an asset to improve output in both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Knowledge has become one of the principle tool of the modern world, be it business organizations, private sector or government sector to increase profits, reach goals and targets and to encourage self- development in the process. It also improves the organization’s ability to consistently re-new itself and increases its innovative abilities.
Human capital as a resource is an important aspect in Knowledge centric Development. Humans have been gifted with the ability to learn from their environment, from their own mistakes and from other’s. Humans use these experiences to evolve and to predict future consequences of a certain action thus, automatically improving their decision making power. This kind of knowledge which is termed as tactic knowledge ensures that contribution of human resource to the efficiency of output and profits of the organization is maximal.
Putting my emphasis on business related fields, I feel that in the present globalised world which is ultra competitive and dynamic with continuous influx of new techniques and technology, it becomes essential to innovate and adopt new strategies to keep up with the fast pacing world. And this further necessitates qualitative human sources that have the ability as well as the will to learn and evolve.
Knowledge-Centric Approach is about providing the right knowledge to the right people at the right time, and helping them apply it in ways that improves organizational performance.
Moving further, I wish to outline another fact. Keeping in mind the vast plethora of knowledge and information which is at our disposal owing to the technology we have today, it becomes essential to extract only the valuable material from the whole.
To be able to make the best use of knowledge it becomes imperative to select only essential material, and then disseminate it among all the employees/workers in the best possible manner. The proper utilization of this knowledge and information is ensured only when it is developed further in such a manner that it can be utilized multiple times and not only once.
In the pre-modern times workers were seen from a much dehumanized lens and their potential as a human resource wasn’t fully realized. That is workers were seen as mechanical assets devoid of any human requirements and feelings. Hence, their labor was seen as the only asset which was also thoroughly exploited.
But with the changes brought about in the world our dependence on manual labor has shifted to technology on a large extent. This has created new jobs and hence new job requirements. Because of the advent of these new requirements, workers are now seen in a different light.
Sophisticated work relationships between the leaders/managers and employees is a pre-requisite to ensure smooth and valuable exchange of knowledge. This can only be achieved when the notion of superiority and inferiority is dissolved by establishing a learning atmosphere. All members irrespective of their position in the organization should be able to put forward for the benefit of all, credible information, knowledge and his/her valuable perspective. Mutual understanding and respect for each other would be important to establish this ideal atmosphere.
This is a very important aspect of knowledge based development which highlights the importance to define and form new-work relationships and abandoning old practices.
The structure of Knowledge Centric Development is built around leaders who themselves should be knowledge oriented. They should be able to apply logical and rational skills and soft powers (which include relational proficiency, emotional intelligence). These skills should be utilized by them to develop a sociable, learning work atmosphere. Usage of various resources whether local or global to acquire knowledge and enhance skills should be encouraged. This would ensure that the employees are involved in a continuous self evolving and self-enhancing process where they empower not only themselves but also each other as well the institution they work for thus ensuring its progress.
Knowledge based economy which is being discussed here necessitates the use of information, knowledge and learning as key resources for delivering profits and enhanced outputs. The digital and technological changes would be easier to adapt to in the organizational structures of institutions if the human resource is well equipped to deal with them and as well with the dynamic world economy.
Knowledge is the only reliable tool in today’s dynamic world where every step is taken with uncertainty and prior experiences are the only certain strength hold of our decisions.
The society plays an imperative role in not only establishing but also in the successful working of a development model based on knowledge centric development.
The structure and working of a particular society is direct and clear indicator of the level of sophistication, mutual understanding, law and order and development the members of the society have established and achieved together.
Societies are a proof of the evolution of human civilization and play an important role in working towards establishing peaceful coexistence amongst all the members simultaneously ensuring that fundamental rights of each citizen are respected and maintained.
Societies also play the role of a moral compass to guide its members. It lays the foundation of certain rules and obligations which all its members are required to oblige to prior to performing any action or taking any decision.
The above mentioned roles played by the society are important to understand how the society shapes economic development. Since societies lay the rules to guide its members, by doing so it simultaneously influences the behavior and expectations of individuals. Trends are regulated by society which in turns influences the demands of individuals in terms of goods and services. These demands further establish the supply chains. Thus the society plays a very direct role in regulating the demand and supply chains, thus controlling the economic growth and development.
The society also encompasses upon business groups, organizations and other private institutions a moral sense of duty and obligation to provide to its members goods and services of optimum quality. Society ensures that its members are not cheated as consumers of the goods and services provided by these institutions and are not exploited as workers and employees of these institutions. Thus societies play the role of checks and balances on the potentially negative effects of private institutions and organization while allowing positive contributions to the economic efficiency.
Not only do societies have an impact on economic growth and development but the latter affects the former too. Economic growth and development carve the path of prosperity and better living standards for the members of the society thus, indirectly helping the society to evolve.
Therefore it becomes imperative to have in place in a society a basic model for the structure of market and an approach and strategies to consistently promote economic growth and development which in this case is knowledge centric based development. The manner in which the society would shape its policies would pivotally shape the economy. Therefore by adopting a knowledge-centric approach a sustainable path would be taken which keeping in mind the status quo of our nation would be an essentially prudent option. It would ensure skill development and would create job seekers with specific knowledge and efficiency related to the field which they aim to proceed in. Given the benefits of knowledge centric approach and the requirements of our nation it seems each complements the other with the former having the ability to dissipate the latter.
