Poverty In Pakistan And How To Solve It.

What Makes Pakistan a poor country and how one can solve it. In the recent news from the World Bank, poverty in Pakistan is close to increasing by 39.4% by 2023 (i.e.,$3.65 /day 2017ppp). Despite the country’s economic growth in recent years, a large portion of the population still grapples with the harsh realities of poverty. A UN report states that Pakistan remains a lower middle-income country and will continue to be vulnerable to fluctuating energy prices.

Root causes of poverty:

  • Equal distribution of wealth:

The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few exacerbates economic inequality, such that a large proportion of the population lacks access to necessities.

  • Limited educational opportunities:

The lack of educational opportunities perpetuates the cycle of poverty, as individuals find it difficult to leave low-wage jobs without the right skills and knowledge.

  • Unemployment and underemployment:

Pakistan faces challenges in the employment sector, resulting in high levels of unemployment and underemployment. Limited employment opportunities, especially in rural areas, force many individuals into low-paying and insecure jobs.

Possible solutions:

  • Investing in education:

Prioritizing and ensuring access to education is paramount. This includes improving the school system and enhancing scholarships and vocational training programs.

  • Promoting Sustainable Agriculture:

Supporting farmers through modern agricultural practices, access to markets, and ensuring fair prices for their products can lead to rural uplift.

  • Creating job opportunities:

By fostering a conducive environment for business and attracting investment, more jobs can be created. In addition, supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

  • Social safety net:

Establishing a strong social safety net can further protect vulnerable people from poverty in times of economic crisis. Direct transfer programs, food assistance, and health care can have a significant impact.
