From America to the United Kingdom to the Saudi Arabia President Cyril Ramaphosa is a rising force to be reckoned with as he signs one deal after another. In late August President Ramaphosa left South Africa for a state visit in America to propose potential trade deals for South Africa’s plan to bring back train transport and incorporate solar energy to disadvantaged parts of the country.
However, this visit was cut short due to the death of the late Queen which led to the president traveling to England to give his condolences for the late Queen and her family as a representative of South Africa and a member of the Commonwealth.
Soon after this visit the South African Presidency newsroom published that President Ramaphosa was invited for a state visit in Saudi Arabia by the custodian of the two Holy Mosques, His Royal Highness King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and will be hosted by HRH Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom Suadi Arabia Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud from 14 – 16 October 2022. This is an effort to renew their bilateral partnership based on cordial and fraternal relations.
Whereby SAnews state these talks of renewing the relationship led to the discussion of Saudi Arabia signing 17 memorandums of understanding with South Africa as well as discussions to join BRICS to improve the South African economy, logistics, and solar power investment.
BRICS is the informal group made up of the cooperation between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa which offered foreign expansion for businesses and strong investment returns for investors whereby Investopedia states that its main aim is to provide funding for emerging market economies in low-income disadvantaged nations.
To summarise, BRICS has led to the continual improvements of trade relations between the countries involved. In order to be part of BRICS, WION claims Saudi Arabia had begun to publicly display its soft power by increasing the oil prices for the European union barely days after the arms deal of guns was denied by President Joe Biden to fight against Iran it is presumed that it turned to South Africa as a potential suppler of different types of guns thus, placing south Africa on equal terms with economic super powers potentially. It is further believed that should Saudi Arabia join BRICS it may stop using the Dollar for its trade sales and use the Chinese won to better improve the economies of underdeveloped nations.
