Washington(CNN)A Twitter poll created by Elon Musk asking whether he should "step down as head of Twitter" ended early Monday morning with most respondents voting in the affirmative.
Twitter Inc. users voted for Elon Musk to step down from his role as head of the social platform in a poll the billionaire entrepreneur said he would respect, potentially leaving the company devoid of senior leadership.
About 58% of the 17.5 million votes cast were in favor of Musk stepping back from the leadership role. If Musk heeds the results, it will mark the end of 53 chaotic days at the helm. It has involved dismissing top executives, eliminating roughly half of its employees, and spooking advertisers.
There has been a flurry of controversial changes on Twitter since Mr. Musk bought the social media site.
Hours before launching the poll, Musk was publicly criticized even by some former supporters in the tech industry for a controversial new policy that had banned links to specific other social media platforms. The procedure was deleted less than 24 hours after its introduction. Musk also said that "going forward," he would poll Twitters users to give them the power to decide on policy changes.
The poll inspired other volunteers, as well. The rapper. Dogg created his Twitter poll Sunday evening, asking: "Should I run Twitter?" As of early Monday morning, it had 1.3 million votes, with over 80% of respondents saying yes.
Yet Musk denied that he had a new CEO in mind.
"No one wants the job who can keep Twitter alive. There is no successor," Musk tweeted. "The question is not finding a CEO; the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive."
On Friday, Mr. Musk was condemned by the United Nations and European Union over Twitter's decision to suspend some journalists who cover the social media firm.
The UN tweeted that media freedom is "not a toy," while the EU threatened Twitter with sanctions.
After starting the poll, Mr Musk tweeted: "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it."
He added later: "Those who want power are the ones who least deserve it."
