The Weeknd Breaks Yet Another Record

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, also known as the artist The Weeknd, has yet again written his name in the Spotify history books.

The song released in 2019, “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd, broke its own record as well as Spotify’s record for having the most streams in the history of the platform.

“Blinding Lights” has officially been streamed over four billion times, which has not been done until now.

“Blinding Lights” was released in November 2019 as the second single from The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours.

Over a year ago, the song had surpassed Ed Sheeran’s song “Shape of You” for the title of being the most streamed song on the platform.

Within the Billboard Hot 100 rankings, “Blinding Lights” spent four weeks in the no. 1 position. The song remained within the top 10 area of the charts ranking for an entire year, making it the first ever song to do so.

In November 2021, “Blinding Lights” dethroned Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” as the No. 1 Hot 100 hit of all time, climbing to the top of Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 chart.

Speaking on his accomplishments, The Weeknd said, “I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people, let alone billions!” “I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.

In February 2023, Spotify announced on X and Instagram that The Weeknd became the first artist in Spotify History to reach 100 Million monthly listeners.

According to Spotify’s most recent numbers, The Weeknd continues to be the platform’s top artist, with 113 million people streaming his music every month.

In total, there was an estimated $15.5 million to $17.5 million in royalties for the sound recording and an additional $4.5 million in publishing.

“Blinding Lights” is not his only song that is thriving. The Weeknd’s 2016 single “Starboy” is ranked at no. 6 of all time with almost three billion streams. It is very close to “Dance Monkey” by Australia Tones and I.
