88-year-old fashion designer Paco Rabanne passed away on February 3 at his home in Portsall, France. His death was confirmed by Puig, the parent company of his brand. "The House of Paco Rabanne wishes to honor our visionary designer and founder, who passed away today at the age of 88."
The renowned Spanish fashion designer was known for his eccentric clothing designs and best-selling fragrances on a global scale. He began his career in fashion by creating jewelry for Dior, Givenchy, and Balenciaga. He later founded his own fashion house in 1966, which led to his success on a global scale.
With his presentation of the 'Manifesto: 12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials' collection, Rabanne made his debut on the French fashion scene in 1966. This collection featured clothing made from unusual materials like paper, metal, and plastic. His best-selling fragrances, 1 Million and Lady Million, still keep a firm hold on the market.
Rabanne broke new ground in the 1970s as one of the first designers to use black women as models, which was considered to be pretty provocative at the time. In doing this, he wanted to do something different and break the mold when it came to fashion. The French fashion industry referred to the Spanish designer as “l'enfant terrible” in the 1960s because of his inability to fit in.
Midway through the 1990s, he was also one of the first perfumers to introduce a product online. He retired in 1999, stepping out of the public eye.
In a statement on Paco Rabanne's official Instagram, the brand described him as a "visionary." "His legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration," it added.
"A major personality in fashion, he had a daring, revolutionary, and provocative vision, conveyed through a unique aesthetic," said chairman Marc Puig.
"That radical, rebellious spirit set him apart; there is only one Rabanne," he added.
