Overwatch 2 has become the worst user-rated game on Steam following its debut on the platform after seven years on Battle.net.
According to Steam250, Overwatch 2 has the lowest percentage of positive user reviews on the Steam platform. It usurped War of the Three Kingdoms as Steam’s worst rated game.
The Steam user reviews for Overwatch 2 lament the path the game has taken. Users panned some of the controversial changes to the business model the game implemented. Overwatch 2 switched from a loot box system, which allowed players to receive high tier loot without spending real money, to a battle pass system requiring players to spend money to obtain high tier loot in the game. Others were upset with the broken promise of adding a PvE mode to the game upon its rebranding from “Overwatch” to “Overwatch 2” in October 2022. Some were also upset at the price change of Overwatch 2 from $60 upon its original release in 2016 release to free upon its rebranding.
Despite the negative publicity, the game has seen tens of thousands of concurrent players, according to SteamDB. The release of Overwatch 2 on Steam, a more popular platform than Battle.net where it debuted, coincided with the long-awaited addition of a PvE mode. This mode currently only features one mission with others scheduled to be released at specific times or locked behind paywalls.
Time will tell if Overwatch 2 will overcome its criticisms and retain an active player base.
