The magical world of Disney Pixar is once again ready to captivate audiences worldwide with its latest animated masterpiece, Elio. After months of anticipation and a few tantalising leaks, the release of the teaser trailer for the upcoming film is upon us, offering a glimpse into a fantastical adventure like no other.
First announced at the D23 Expo in September 2022, the film introduces us to Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a plucky dreamer whose life takes an unexpected turn when he is accidentally transported to the Communiverse, a vast intergalactic organisation connecting countless galaxies.
In a case of mistaken identity, Elio is hailed as Earth's ambassador, thrusting him into a daunting role he is ill-prepared for. As he embarks on this extraordinary journey, Elio must not only find his place within the vast universe but also discover his true purpose and identity.
The cast behind this latest Disney Pixar animation has also created intense anticipation: America Ferrera, Brad Garrett and Jameela Jamil are also among the voice cast for the film, which is the 28th feature from the company and will land in cinemas on March 1 next year.
Adrian Molina, who has previously worked with the studio for titles such as Coco and Lightyear, will be making his directorial debut with the upcoming release, creating an entirely new world after Pixar's focus on sequels over the course of the last decade.
It’s fair to say it has been a busy couple of years for Disney and Pixar. Elio marks their 28th collaborative feature film following this June's Elemental. In addition, Inside Out 2 — the sequel to 2015's Inside Out — is scheduled to be released in 2024.
Pixar also has an original TV show, Win or Lose, set to premiere on Disney+ this December. The show, which is Pixar's first original series, follows a co-ed school softball team in the week before their championship game.
It is important to note however, that Pixar has a bit of a mixed history with sci-fi films. 2008’s Wall-E is a much-loved modern classic, while last year’s Lightyear struggled to find an audience at the box office and didn’t have anywhere near the cultural impact of its Toy Story franchise counterparts.
As expected, initial reactions are a mixed bag. One reddit user stated: ‘This still didn't really impress me too much, but I also didn't think Coco looked all that interesting from the trailer either…Since this one has much of the same creative team as that film, I hope that translates over to Elio here too’.
Whilst many fans remain somewhat cynical of what the trailer promises, Elio will at least be able to deliver a beautifully animated space adventure with plenty of humour, that will no doubt make for a fun family classic.
