On Mar. 4, 2023, B.C.’s first triathlon of the year was held on the UBC campus. As one of the longest-running triathlons in B.C. and one of Canada’s largest, this thrilling event brought together over 860 athletes, according to the UBC Triathlon and Duathlon Crew.
It is worth noticing that the participants included several seniors who showed their commitment to an active lifestyle. Despite their age, these individuals proved that they are capable of participating in physical activities.
Stephen Morris (Participant)
“I’m a busy senior, so I keep moving every day. I roller skate during half the year, so I suppose that’s what gave me the cardiovascular stamina to do this. I’m slow and I’m steady. When I’m in the pool. Lots of people pass me, but in the last 200 meters, I pass them because I’ve got endurance.”
Morris completed his race within 2 hours and 19 minutes. His own life philosophy drives him to do this.
Stephen Morris (Participant)
“When you get older, you got to keep moving.”
“If you don't keep moving you die.”
Due to the rain and cold weather, the schedule of the race had been delayed by one hour.
Nicho Cremer (Participant)
“I don’t wanna fall off the bike. It’s so slippery yet I don’t know, my god. That’s my only true goal. And to beat my friends. Some of my friends are doing it.”
Deryn Macey (Participant)
“It was very fun. Hard but fun.”
Even though the weather was not favorable, the participants showed their passion and finished their race in the rain.
