Obesity and Overweight

Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation which will weaken health. The rise in body fat can risk serious health problems. Obesity or overweight occurs when a person's body mass index is 25 or greater.

BMI ( Body Mass Index )

BMI is about weight for height used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is calculated as an individual's weight (in kilograms) ÷ square of height (in meters) or Kg/m². BMI provides a rough guide for the most useful population-level measure of overweight and obesity as it is the same for both sexes and for all ages of adults.

Cause of obesity

The symptoms of obesity or being overweight are increased in body fats. The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is imbalance of energy between calories consumed and calories expended. When we consume high amounts of energy, particularly fat and sugars, and do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, much of the surplus energy will be stored by the body as fat which causes overweight and obesity. Another cause is an increase in physical inactivity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, work from home, and increasing urbanization.

Consequences

Raised BMI is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart disease and stroke), diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and some cancers (endometrial, colon and breast). Childhood obesity is linked with higher chances of obesity, premature death and disability in adulthood. Obese children experience perience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension, etc.

Obesity and being overweight are preventable. The key to prevent obesity and overweight is to achieve an energy balance between calories consumed and calories burned.
