9 from Assam conferred with the Padma Awards

Ram Nath Kovind, President of India awarded the prestigious Padma awards to eminent Indians on Monday. 9 people from Assam were conferred the Padma Awards 2021. This includes 8 Padma Shri awardees and one Padma Bhushan awardee. The 119 conferred awards included 7 Padma Vibhushan awardees, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri awardees. This list also included 29 women, 10 persons in the Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI category, 16 posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee. President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, led the function for the official ceremony of the Padma Awards 2021 on Monday, 8 November. It was organized at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. 

The government of India conferred the former Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, the third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan for the year 2021, posthumously. Tarun Gogoi was a veteran political leader from Assam. People of Assam elected him as the Chief Minister three times.

8 people from Assam were conferred with the fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri Award 2021. In the field of Literature and Education, Roman Sarmah, Mangal Singh Hazowary and Imran Shah from Assam were conferred the Padma Shri Award 2021. In the field of art, Gopiram Bargayn Burabhakat and Dulal Manki from Assam were conferred the Padma Shri Award 2021. Bijaya Chakravarty from Assam received the Padma Shri award for Public Affairs. On the other hand, Lakshmi Baruah and Birubala Rabha from Assam received the Padma Shri Award for Social Work.

Lakhimi Baruah is a social worker from Jorhat, Assam who established the first Women-run Cooperative Bank in Assam. Birubala Rabha worked against a decade-old evil practice, witch-hunting, across the entire northeastern region. Dulal Manki, popularly known as Jhumar Samrat is a renowned Assamese singer from Tinsukia, Assam. Gopiram Bargayan Burabhakat is a veteran folk musician from Majuli, Assam. He groomed the traditional Sattriya Nritya for around 7 decades. Roman Sarmah, a journalist from Kamrup is the editor of 89-year-old magazine, Bordoichila. Mangal Singh Hazowary contributed for more than 4 decades to Bodo literature. Imran Shah contributed to Assamese Literature and Culture for 6 decades. Bijoya Chakravarty is a flag bearer of the Assam Movement. She is a senior leader and educationist from Assam.

The Government of India awards Citizens of India, the Padma Awards every year for their distinguished contribution in various fields. This includes arts, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public affairs.  India established the Padma Awards in 1954.
