A Colorado Springs Tragedy

On November 19th, 2022, another mass shooting occurred in Colorado Springs, CO, United States. The mass shooting occurred at Club Q, an LQBTQ nightclub. The suspect entered the nightclub in body armor and wielding an AR-15 style rifle and a handgun and began shooting.

Five people died with at least 19 more suffering injuries. A few heroic individuals were able to come together to bring the suspected gunman down by tackling him and preventing additional deaths.

Many individuals who identify with the LQBTQ community consider Club Q a safe-haven in the conservative city. It was a place where they could go and be free. Everyone has a right to feel safe and secure in the city they reside and not fear harm inflicted upon them for who they are. This attack was devastating to the community and nation, but many are thankful for the quick reactions of heroic patrons who brought down the gunman. The owner of Club Q, Nick Grzecka, plans to re-open the nightclub following the attack and says in a telephone interview with NPR, that work is being done to ensure it continues to provide the space that is needed for the LQBTQ and Colorado Springs Community.

The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, is being charged with five counts of murder and five counts of “biased motivated crime causing bodily injury” which falls under Colorado’s equivalent of a hate crime. In court filings, Aldrich’s attorneys wrote that Aldrich is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. Aldrich’s motive remains undetermined.

This tragic and horrific event has caused members of the LQBTQ community great fear in the already conservative and long-known “anti-gay” city of Colorado Springs. This club was a home for many individuals and a place where they felt safe. Governor Jared Polis released some resources following the deadly shooting, for those who are experiencing a crisis and/or struggling with mental health. Club owner, Grzecka, has also expressed that the city officials in Colorado Springs have been wonderful in providing support, therapy, and advocating for the victims and their families which does not always happen. The Colorado Healing Fund is a non-profit organization that was created to help communities and families rebuild after tragedies and is accepting donations that will go to the victims' families and survivors.

The Colorado Springs community is horrified and devastated following what happened at Club Q. People have gathered to mourn the victims and support those who are going through this difficult time. This mass shooting has raised questions about the reputation of Colorado Springs being highly conservative with significant religious values. The sign outside of a local Christian ministry was vandalized following the Club Q shooting. The vandalism accused the organization of influencing and complicity in the tragic massacre. “Their blood is on your hands. Five lives taken,” was graffitied on the brick sign in front of the organization.

Focus on the Family Vandalism

Focus on the Family was founded in California in 1977. On the organization's website

can be found anti-LQBTQ statements where it believes marriage is between a man and a woman. The Christian ministry is known for their hateful theology of eradicating queerness. The vandalism was an obvious response to what occurred at Club Q several days before.

The Colorado Springs and LQBTQ communities are coming together and grieving and mourning this tragic event. Club Q will remain a sanctuary for Colorado Springs’ community despite this horrific tragedy. The victims of this vicious attack will forever be remembered.
