Well-known Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is alive and being held in a Russian penal colony in Siberia, according to one of his spokespersons.

There had been fears surrounding Navalny after his team had not had contact with him since December 6th, when he had been moved from a previous prison.

This was followed by the absence of the Kremlin critic for the rest of the month at scheduled court appearances. Mr. Navalny is considered one of President Putin’s biggest political opponents in Russia. He has been imprisoned in Russia since 2021.

“His lawyer saw him today. Alexei is fine,” Ms. Yarmysh wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Ms. Yarmysh continued stating that Mr. Navalny had been moved to the IK-3 penal colony in the Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, in Northern Russia. Previously, he had been held in Melekhovo, 235 km east of the capital Moscow.

A Political Prisoner

The new prison in which Mr. Navalny is being held has been given the nickname “The Polar Wolf”. It is considered as one of the toughest prisons in Russia, with the majority of inmates having been convicted of serious crimes.

Ms. Yarmysh said that the Russian authorities had the intention of isolating Mr. Navalny and "trying to make his life as unbearable as possible.".

"This colony is very distant; it is very difficult to access it, and for lawyers, it will be very difficult to go there and see Alexei," she added.

Ivan Zahdov, Mr. Navalny's aid, said that the new move highlighted how “the system deals with political prisoners, trying to isolate and suppress them.”

Mr. Navalny rose to prominence during his campaigns against corruption in Russia. He would gain mass attention and millions of views for his video investigations into corruption. Mr Navalny managed to be one of the only Russian opposition leaders to Putin who had the capability of mobilising people in large numbers to take part in anti-government protests.

In 2020, Mr. Navalny was poisoned while in Siberia; he was treated outside of Russia. Western laboratories confirmed later that he had been poised by a nerve agent.

When he returned to Russia, he was arrested immediately.
