The Korean group Babymonster, the new all-female group formed by the Korean label YG Entertainment, will all be making their debut this year, contrary to what was previously announced by YG.
Although YG Entertainment had originally stated that only five members would debut in 2023, all seven members will now be starting their careers as idols this year, according to Yang Hyun-suk, the founder of YG Entertainment.
All Is Well That Ends Well
On December 30, 2022, YG Entertainment, one of the most influential music labels in Korea, hinted at the debut of a seven-member girl group through the release of a poster with the subtext "YG Next Movement." On it, seven members appear, all girls, aged from 14 to 21. All the girls are Asians, from Korea, Thailand, as well as Japan.
The label has revolutionized K-pop with its female groups, such as 2NE1, who made their mark on the world with their music released between 2009 and 2014, including hits like "I Am The Best," "Fire," "Can't Nobody," and "Come Back Home," which was featured in a Windows commercial. More recently, Blackpink made history by being the first K-pop girl group to reach one billion YouTube views with their hit song "DDU-DU DDU-DU" and becoming the first K-pop group to headline Coachella.
YG recently made a huge buzz on Twitter after announcing that a new girl group, Babymonster, will debut this year. Although the ages of the girls have been debated, with many claiming that they were too young to debut, YG also announced that all seven members would debut, despite earlier plans to choose only five.
This announcement shocked fans who had discovered the girls through training sessions released on YouTube, generating millions of views. While some fans saw it coming, with one Twitter user asking, "Why would they freely promote all seven members if they are only going to pick five?"
When Can We Expect a Debut?
The group is expected to have the most anticipated debut of the year, but no official date has been confirmed yet.
Fans will have to wait a few more months until 2024, and hopefully, YG won't delay the girls' debut.
