Assam saw the havoc of another mob lynch. The broad daylights of the Jorhat district of Assam experienced the death of an AASU leader, Animesh Bhuyan, on Monday, 29 November 2021. The miscreants also injured two of his friend, which also included a journalist from Pratidin Time. The journalist, Mridusmanta Baruah along with Animesh and their friend Pranay Dutta went to Jorhat. A mob of around 50 people attacked them after a road mishap. Authorities rushed them to the hospital where the doctors declared Animesh dead upon his arrival. Animesh hails from Dergaon, a small town in the adjoining district of Golaghat.
GP Singh, SDGP of Assam tweeted on Monday night that they have arrested 10 persons involved in the incident until then. The All Assam Students Association (AASU) asserted that they want the State Police to arrest all the culprits within 24 hours. Sankar Jyoti Baruah, general secretary of AASU, mentioned that AASU will take action if the police can’t nab all the miscreants within 24 hours.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, assured the State that he would implement strict actions against the culprits. He asserted that the miscreants involved in the crime will be booked and the authority will serve justice to the victims.
The incident erupted from a misunderstanding concerning a road mishap. A drunk man on a two-wheeler fell. Mridusmanta and Pranay helped the man pick himself up. Surprisingly the man started accusing them. He cursed and threatened Mridusmanta to poke him in his eyes with the keys and rushed forward. As stated by Pranay and Mridusmanta, Animesh caught the man’s hands when he rushed to attack. Within seconds, a mob gathered and started attacking the three youth. The mob took the three friends in three different directions and attacked them without analyzing the incident. Reportedly, around 50 people attacked them. The police arrived but it was too late for Animesh.
Authorities identified Niraj Das as the main culprit of the incident. Assam Police reportedly arrested 13 culprits including Niraj Das on Tuesday. Niraj Das aka Kala Gunda has been arrested by the police many times before. 9 out of the 13 arrested culprits was identified as Niraj Das, Mohan Das, Deba Das, Sarulora Das, Chiranjeeb, Bitopan Das, Bikram Das, Subhash Bora and Ahinash Bora.
Reportedly in the latest turn of events, Niraj Das died after getting hit by a Police escort car. He jumped out of the Police jeep to escape and got hit by an escorting car. Three other Police personnels got injured during the accident. Niraj Das was declared dead in Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. The three Police personnels are undergoing treatment.
