
Assam Government is planning on conducting a special recruitment drive for specially-abled people in the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam informed the mass about this on International Day of Persons with Disabilites. The state’s social welfare department and Kamrup district administration in association with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) and observed this occasion along with the rest of the world on Friday. On this occasion the world acknowledges the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted on the occasion that the state government is committed to the welfare and wellbeing of the ‘Divyangjans’. The Chief Minister also stated that his government is pursuing several initiatives for the welfare of Divyangjans. The minister mentioned that the occasion is an opportunity to express our gratitude to the specially-abled people. This people constitute an important segment of the state’s human resources, Sarma mentioned. He also informed that the government has increased the reservation quota for specially-abled people to four percent in jobs and educational institutions.
The Chief Minister also added that a separate directorate, Directorate of Social Justice and Empowerment, to expedite socio-economic and academic empowerment of the specially-abled people has been opened and notified. The Government will upgrade the Blind School at Basishta, Guwahati and the Deaf and Dumb School at Kahilipara, Guwahati to Higher Secondary Level. The Government will do this as a mark of gratitude to the specially-abled people. The government will also develop an Assamese Sign Language for the development of the specially-abled people in the state.
The Chief Minister distributed wheelchairs to specially-abled people on the occasion. He distributed wheelchairs among 4000 specially-abled people at Kumar Bhaskar Varma Kshetra in Amigaon. He stated in the meeting that the government will give wheelchairs and tri-rickshaws to all people with mobility challenges. This Government will do this by December next year. People with mobility to receive wheelchairs by December 2022 amounts to an estimate of 50,000 people. He also said that the International Day for Persons with Disabilities helps in creating public awareness of the needs of specially-abled people.
Ajanta Neog, Minister for Social Welfare spoke on the occasion and elaborated the schemes that her department has taken for the specially-abled people. Various dignitaries and representatives of different organisations were present in the occasion including Pradip Thakuria, Chairman of Senior Citizen Council. Assam observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities across the state.
