At Least 6 People Dead and 24 Wounded After Mass Shooting at an Independence Day Parade in the Chicago Suburbs, Suspect Still at Large

HIGHLAND PARK, IL – At least six people have been killed, and 24 were wounded or injured at a July 4th Parade in the wealthy Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois. Hundreds of people fled the scene when an unidentified gunman opened fire on the parade route, creating a dangerous situation on the July 4th holiday. Police say that the suspect is still at large and has not been found yet. As a result, the city of Highland Park has been shut down as authorities look to find the perpetrator of these horrific attacks.

According to representatives from the Highland Park Police, the suspect was a young, white male gunman between the ages of 18-20 with long black hair. According to one witness from the scene, the unknown gunman was wearing a “grayish-brown uniform-style and hat.” The shooting happened at 10:14 AM CET when the gunman opened fire from a roof on top of a building in downtown Highland Park, with the suspect using what is believed to be a rifle. The parade that was occurring at the time was a children’s and pets parade for the town's residents, a grim milestone for a nation reeling from gun violence in the wake of controversial decisions from the government.

Multiple people took cover and shelter in stores, shops, and buildings around Highland Park. The police quickly resolved the situation as details about the shooting remain sparse. The Highland Park shooting this afternoon was the 308th mass shooting this year in the United States, a grim figure that continues as we move towards the second half of the year. Over 250 mass shootings in the United States have occurred in 2022, with the Highland Park shooting occurring on a national holiday. As the nation awaits President Biden’s and the government's actions, the looming question of police reform, abolition, and funding continue to question.

Highland Park is a small Chicago suburb with just under 30,000 people. Famous town residents have included NBA legends Micheal Jordan and Scottie Pippen, actor Ben Savage, and Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss. Towns surrounding Highland Park, IL like Evanston, Deerfield, Glencoe, and Morton Grove have cancelled their July 4th Independence Day celebrations due to the mass shooting in the area.
