With Covid-19 cases rapidly increasing in China due to the omicron variant, the government has imposed a strict lockdown in Shanghai. Due to this situation, it is quite uncertain to assume when can Indian students return to China for their studies.
The highest number of foreign students in the Universities of China belong to India, the number rounding up to about 20,000. The majority of students have gone for medical studies but, because of Covid, students have not been able to return to college. This has created a gap of two years but even now there is an uncertainty in return as the number of cases are rising in China. India and China have discussed the situation and wish to cooperate in these difficult times to ensure that not a single student suffers any loss in their education.
Chinese officials in discussion with Indian officials, Chinese Minister Wang Yi and External Affairs Minister A. Jaishankar, have requested for a list of students who wishes to return and resume their education. Students are being encouraged to submit the information to the Indian Embassy in Beijing.
China has also decided to provide the Indian students with assistance so that they can return from India with ease. China is ready to offer any help and the officials have given ample time to the Indian Government in collecting the data of the students for their safe return.
The process has already been initiated by the Chinese Government. The forms are being released by the embassy for the student to fill in the information. The Chinese Government have shown support for the students and other countries have already signed an agreement stating the return of the students. This includes Pakistan and Sri Lanka who has signed an agreement the previous week. South Korea has also shown positive signs in this process.
