The Jiu-Jitsu world champion was murdered this Sunday with a shot to the head. The Brazilian Leandro Pereira do Nascimento was at a concert in São Paulo when the tragedy happened. A friend, who was with the athlete at the time of the murder, says that the origin of the death of the 33-year-old world champion was a disagreement with a police officer. In statements to CNN, Leandro's friend, who did not want to be identified, said, "he came in and grabbed a bottle of booze on our table. Lo just restrained him from calming him down. However, he [the cop] took five steps and fired." The boy, one of the late sportsman's best friends, reinforced, "When everyone thought the mess was over, the military policeman took four steps back and returned. He took a gun from his waistband and shot him point-blank in the head." Several witnesses on the scene confirmed the story of Leandro's friend. They reported that the police officer responsible for the crime kicked the sportsman after he was already on the ground. The killer was identified as Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, an off-duty police officer.
According to the Brazilian press, Velozo had already been punished for acts of indiscipline, for having interfered in an argument and assaulted another police officer, as quoted by Jornal de Notícias. The alleged killer surrendered to Brazilian authorities after leaving the crime scene and will remain in custody for 30 days. The wake took place this Monday in São Paulo. The mother of the eight-time world champion fighter told the newspaper G1, "He was a fighter in life; on the tatami, he only brought joy to us. He was very concerned about his family. He was joy in person and a person who did this to him. Moreover, the person knew him because he was also a Jiu-Jitsu fighter, and it ended up happening. The person has already gone for this, for sure, he has already gone for this, but we do not know why."
