On December 20, 2021, the air ambulance service was started in Odisha by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik under Mukhyamantri Vayu Swasthya Sewa for benefitting poor people who cannot afford expensive healthcare facilities. The air ambulance took off its first flight from Biju Patnaik International Airport.
Air ambulance is a service that is facilitated with all necessary types of equipment and facilities and has a specialized medical team on board. Necessary types of equipment include NICU equipment (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), CRP equipment (c-reactive protein test), State of the art stretchers, ECGs, and Heart monitoring units.
Odisha was one of the first states to start this service. It provides facilities in the rural interior areas. Karnataka is the first Indian state which has launched the first integrated Air ambulance service in South India.
It has started with 4 tribal-dominated districts such as Malkangiri, Nabarangpura, Nuapuda & Kalahandi to provide better healthcare facilities to the people, free of cost. It will then expand to other districts in a phased manner.
It will prove to be very beneficial for the poor and tribal people. The air ambulance would especially help during the pandemic as it saves a lot of time. It will help in transferring critical patients and organs in the prescribed time. In this time of developing technology and a modernised era, this was an essential step taken by the Odisha's Government.
