China: 9 arrested for brutally attacking women in a restaurant

After security footage of the attack aroused global anger, Chinese officials arrested nine people on suspicion of physically beating multiple women at a restaurant.

Footage taken at 2:40 a.m. Friday at a BBQ restaurant in Tangshan, northern Hebei province, showed one of the males approaching a table where a group of four ladies were seated and placing his hand on one of the women's backs.

The man is seen punching her before being dragged outside and attacked as she is lying on the ground.

Her dining mates are also attacked by the bunch of males.

On Saturday, the video went viral in China, occupying the top six spots on Weibo's most-discussed issues.

Pictures of her lying on a stretcher with a swollen and bleeding face, as well as video of the incident, went viral on the internet.

The assault and public outcry reignited a debate in China about misogyny and women's mistreatment. A viral video of a woman tied to a hut wall earlier this year sparked outrage after police originally denied she was a victim of human trafficking. Later, it was discovered that she had been sold as a bride.

According to a statement released by officials on the microblogging platform Weibo on Saturday, all nine suspects were detained.

Two women were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and were being treated. Their condition has been described as stable. Two others sustained minor injuries.

According to Tangshan city police, "the situation is being probed further." Nine persons have been arrested on suspicion of violent assault and "provoking trouble."

Netizens criticised predatory behaviour and demanded heavy punishment, urging authorities to crack down on violence against women.
