Crackdown on Khalistan Sympathisers

Amid an ongoing crackdown, at least 78 aides of pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh have been arrested in Punjab’s Jalandhar. According to reports, some of his sympathizers' homes have been raided. A special state police force, comprising officers from seven districts trailed his convoy. He was last spotted riding away on a motorcycle at high speed.

As per the police, the Punjab Police have detained Daljeet Singh Kalsi in Haryana's Gurgaon, who manages Amritpal Singh's finances. A significant number of police officers has been set up outside of Amritpal Singh's hamlet, Jallupur Khaira, in the Amritsar district, in anticipation of unrest. Reports claim that the village has been sealed by police and paramilitary units.

Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, has recently become a controversial figure in the media. In the Ajnala Police Station outside of Amritsar last month, his followers and the police clashed over the release of one of Amritpal's aides. Some of the supporters were armed with swords and firearms.

In an interview, he said that he rejects the idea of a nation-state and contrasts his Indian citizenship with the British-issued passport that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi received. Additionally, he believes that in a democratic system, the demand for Khalistan is legitimate. “In a democracy, a person will be acknowledged if they stand up and say, I am not a Hindu. To accept this sentiment peacefully is a democratic ideal. In the same way, if we claim that we don't relate to this country and we want to express ourselves, we will peacefully push for a separate country and want freedom.” This has occurred all around the world. But, if such emotion is repressed, it will manifest as violence.

In response to criticism from the state's opposition parties, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had recently stated that his government was committed to upholding law and order in the province. He added that nobody would be permitted to disturb the hard-earned tranquility of the state.
