While the game on Super Bowl was dedicated to two teams, and neither was from Buffalo, NY, it still didn’t stop Damar Hamlin, from attracting everyone’s attention with his jacket. Hamlin wore a football-style letterman jacket to the game that showed Jesus Christ crucified but unorthodoxly.
The jacket on the back portrays Jesus Christ on the cross with a disfigured face and the crown of thorns made out of Marijuana. It went viral during Sunday’s game, and many took to social media to express their opinion.
Many of the reactions to Hamlin’s jacket were negative, with many seeming to question why Hamlin would wear anything of the sort, given he survived his cardiac arrest weeks ago. Former Minnesota Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson, took to Instagram to discuss his dislike of the jacket.
“This is Blasphemy! We all fall short but cmon man! I find this disrespectful!” He later took the suggestion of another former NFL player, Fred Taylor, and changed the post. Taylor suggested that Adrian message Hamlin and discuss why the jacket is inappropriate.
Taylor updated his post by saying he wasn’t trying to judge anyone but that he simply could not support the jacket due to his faith. He later continued by saying he has respect for Hamlin but that he needs to be more careful because he has so much influence and could lead people down the wrong path.
Others on Twitter also expressed their thoughts, with one user tweeting, “this might not be the best way to show gratitude to Jesus after what had happened to him on the field recently.” Another said Damar “spat in the faces” of the people of faith who prayed for him while he was injured.
Hamlin’s jacket choice seems to be especially bad timing, given artist Sam Smith’s performance at the Grammy’s last week, which included Smith dressing up as the devil and singing his hit song “Unholy” with Kim Petras.
Doctors have stated that while Hamlin was able to be released from the hospital, they highly encouraged him to leave the sport behind and have a “normal life.” Hamlin was also on his social media, posting one picture of himself on the sidelines and another with famous basketball player Lebron James.
