David Soul: Starsky & Hutch actor passes at age 80

Renowned actor David Soul, celebrated for his iconic role in the television series Starsky & Hutch, passed away at the age of 80. His wife, Helen Snell, announced his death on Thursday, revealing that he bravely fought for life surrounded by his loving family. Remembered for his multifaceted talents as an actor, singer, storyteller, and creative artist, Soul's impact on the world resonates through his extraordinary gifts.

Best known for portraying Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson alongside Paul Michael Glaser in the classic crime-solving series Starsky & Hutch, Soul's contribution to the entertainment industry left an indelible mark. The series, which aired from 1975 to 1979, showcased his acting prowess and became a cultural phenomenon. In 2004, Soul and Glaser reprised their roles in a remake of Starsky & Hutch, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson taking on the lead roles.

In a heartfelt tribute, Ben Stiller reposted a clip from the original TV series, emphasizing Soul's role in defining the 70s cool and wishing him peace.

Beyond Starsky & Hutch, Soul's career spanned various notable roles in productions such as Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force, The Yellow Rose, and Salem's Lot. Acclaimed author Stephen King, acknowledging Soul's role in the adaptation of his horror novel Salem's Lot, expressed sorrow at the news of the actor's passing.

Soul's artistic endeavors extended to British television, where he made appearances in shows like Holby City, Little Britain, and Lewis. Notably, in 2004, he acquired British citizenship, showcasing his international reach.

Despite opportunities to capitalize on fame through reality television, Soul declined, expressing his disdain for the trend of celebrity culture. In his words to the Sunday Times, he remarked, "These days anybody is a celebrity, and, frankly, there's nothing to celebrate."

Soul's personal life had moments of controversy, notably an arrest in the 1980s for attacking his then-wife, Patti Carnel Sherman. However, he addressed this dark chapter with remorse and used it as an opportunity to advocate against domestic violence, visiting prisons to speak with inmates.

Born in Chicago in 1943 as David Solberg, Soul's early career involved folk singing, initially warming up audiences for notable musicians. His journey to fame included a stint as "The Covered Man" before transitioning to acting, where he found success in shows like Star Trek, Here Come The Brides, and Perry Mason.

The actor's breakthrough came with his role as Officer John Davis in Magnum Force, a police drama alongside Clint Eastwood, paving the way for his iconic role in Starsky & Hutch. Post the show's success, Soul returned to music, producing albums of soft rock ballads that yielded UK number one singles, "Silver Lady" and "Don't Give Up On Us."

Soul, married five times, leaves behind a legacy of six children. His meeting with Helen Snell during the performance of Deathtrap marked the beginning of a deep connection, with Soul referring to her as his "soulmate." David Soul's impact on the entertainment industry, his resilience, and his multifaceted talents will be fondly remembered by those whose lives he touched.
