In March of 2022, Walt Disney World opened Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a completely immersive Star Wars-themed hotel. The hotel costs millions of dollars to create with little return profit. The Galactic Starcruiser hotel will officially shut its doors in September of this year.
Galactic Starcruiser is the first hotel of its kind, offering a two-night experience where guests had the opportunity to be the hero of their own Star Wars adventure. Disney advertised this experience as “the most immersive Star Wars story ever created—one where you live a bespoke experience and journey further into a Star Wars adventure than you ever dreamed possible.”
This experience can be closely compared to one of a cruise ship, being a set itinerary each day. The company has described this experience as, “part live immersive theater, part themed environment, part culinary extravaganza, part real-life role-playing game—and yet so much more.”
While the Galactic Starcruiser hotel sold out in its first few months open, it hasn’t been fully booked since, with fewer excursions being purchased weekly. So much so that the company began cutting down the number of excursions being offered per week on their calendar.
This underperformance is due to its enormous price tag; a two-night stay for two guests would cost $4,800 and up to $6,800 for four. Regardless of the price, trips for the last week of operation have sold out.
When Disney announced these cuts, they used it to show their guests optimism for their future projects. “This premium, boutique experience allowed us to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans,” the Disney company stated.
Josh D’Amaro, the Head of Disney Parks and Resorts, explained that while the hotel will be closing, it was still a great learning experience for the company moving forward. D’Amaro explained that while the Galactic Starcruiser hotel did not perform the way the company had hoped, it had raised the bar for all of their projects in the future. D’Amaro also took a moment to express his gratitude towards the cast members that helped bring the Star Wars magic to life.
