Drug-Resistant Disease Affects Kenya’s Capital

A study that was recently carried out by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, shows that people living in the city might be on the verge of getting infected by a drug-resistant disease known as super gonorrhea.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Patrick Amoth, who is the African region representative and the Vice President of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that super gonorrhea was discovered in Nairobi and the spread is rampant.

He further added that the study was carried out on 400 participants and was strictly directed at sex workers. However, no one was forced to be part of the study, and everyone that participated did so willingly.

According to the ministry of health, out of 400 samples that were tested, one sample was resistant to all the antibiotics it was put through. Dr. Amoth suggested that people use condoms and stick to their marriage or paternity in order to avoid this incurable disease, citing a recent study that found Nairobi to be one of the cities where men have more than one sexual partner.

In the clinic where the study was carried out, high cases of 350 samples were found. The study further indicated that approximately three and a quarter of the study victims admitted to having unprotected sex with their sexual clients.

The unprotected sex was discovered to have been caused by higher pay. The victims claimed that they get more pay anytime they engage in unprotected sex compared to protected sex, where their clients tend to pay less money.

According to the study report, one of the sex workers that participated in the study claimed that she has a lot of bills to handle, and therefore she makes sure to have unprotected intercourse with at least 29 sexual partners every two weeks, to manage her bills.

The World Health Organization has recognized this sexually transmitted disease, super gonorrhea, as drug-resistant, especially to the currently recommended treatment. It is not only hitting Nairobi but has also been discovered in countries like Japan, Thailand, and the UK. Therefore, people should take precautions and take this study seriously to stop the spread.
