End of COVID-19 pandemic is near

The end of the COVID-19 pandemic is "in sight", the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said in a news briefing held on Sept. 14.

WHO says weekly deaths worldwide are at the lowest since March 2022.

In the UK, infections are currently at their lowest level since August 2021.

Comparing the progress to a marathon runner, Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said,

“We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic - we are not there yet, but the end is in sight, we can see the finish line, we're in a winning position. But now is the worst time to stop running.”

He announced that the WHO is releasing six new policies that state the actions that governments must urgently take.

The documents will include guidance on testing, vaccination and best practice for managing the disease.

About 11,000 people globally died from COVID during the week of Sept. 5 through Sept. 11. which was a drop of 22% from the previous week, the WHO reported.

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on a new COVID-19 booster shot; hope is in sight for the end.

Expectations are that the booster will work effectively if a new variant becomes the prominent strain.

Scientists are working to develop COVID vaccines that dont require freezing or refrigeration and that have an extended shelf life.
