The Karachi police office (KPO) came under siege at 7:10 PM on Friday. Armed militants barged into the five-storey building located on main Sharea Faisal. For now, a successful operation has been carried out killing three terrorists as reported by Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui, spokesperson of the Sindh government. It was a large-scale retaliation in which South and East DIGs, Rangers, and the army commandos were involved. The operation is completed and clearance is underway. DIG east Muqaddas Haider told Dawn, that the three attackers arrived at the KPO in a Toyota Corolla. One of them blew himself up on the building's fourth floor and the other two were shot dead on the roof. The Saddar police station next to the police chief's office also came under attack as told by SHO, PI Khalid Hussain Memon.
Sharea Faisal had been closed for traffic and citizens are asked to stay away from the operation site till the situation is all clear. The entire city's police have been called to action including Quick Response Force (QRF) and the bomb disposal squad to check for the insurgent's equipment. It was a pre-planned attack executed shrewdly but the police force responded with equal fervor.
Regarding casualties, Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui took on Twitter quoting numbers and updates about the situation. He wrote "The latest information is that 4 people were martyred (2 policemen, 1 ranger, and 1 civilian) while 14 people are injured, who are being treated. Out of the injured 1 person is critical while the condition of 13 injured persons is stable."
The Tehrik e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has taken responsibility for the incident as sourced by Reuters. Given the tense relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, TTP has become emboldened in its insurgencies. One of the deadliest attacks took place in late January in Peshawar killing more than 100 people in a police compound.
The condemnations have been made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Dr. Arif Alvi, and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The interior and federal ministers are instructed to probe inquiry into the matter. Officials have vowed to eradicate the scourge of terrorism from Pakistan. People are quite jolted by this terror episode and prayers are being sent to the affectees.
