The latest act of controversy coming out of Florida involves proposed bill SB1248, otherwise referred to as the “Ultimate Cancel Act” by its writers. Newly elected Florida Senator Blaise Ingoglia is responsible for sponsoring the bill and finished filing Tuesday morning.
Though Ingoglia is the main actor behind the bill, speculators believe that Republicans across Florida stand to benefit tremendously from it being signed into law. Ingoglia was also the sponsor of a proposed bill filed on Monday which aims to implement term limits on government roles like county commissioner and school board membership.
According to the filing available on the Florida Senate’s official website, the bill would require Florida’s Division of Elections to cancel the filings of a political party should certain conditions be met, as determined by the state. Currently, the condition states that cancellation will occur “If the party’s platform has previously advocated for, or been in support of, slavery or involuntary servitude”.
Additionally, a party’s rights are revoked due to meeting these conditions the bill also requires that registered voters of the party are notified and that the party is granted the right to re- register at a later date.
Considering prior moves taken by the DeSantis Administration against concepts and ideas they oppose, the likelihood of the bill being passed and weaponized against Democrats in the state is high. Prior to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election becoming the catalyst for the ‘party switch’ in 1932, the Democratic Party was the main proponent of regressive values in Congress.
As such, they were the bulk of votes for legislation favoring the conditions listed in the Ultimate Cancel Act and are subject immediately to removal should the bill kick into effect on the first of July.
Ironically, both the Republican and Democratic Party are guilty of upholding the remnant structures of slavery in places like our prison systems and lower-income neighborhoods but it is unlikely that Florida Republicans admit to being complicit. Thus, the implementation of such a one-sided and dictatorial law is understandably receiving backlash from the general public.
Scarily, Governor DeSantis just conducted an interview with Fox News where he discusses “reconstitutionalizing the federal government” should he manage to win the presidential election in 2024. In the conversation, DeSantis seems to have little regard for the legal or moral consequences of his policy decisions and even admits that it is guaranteed they’ll challenge such a proposal in court.
While Florida’s Governor continues to prove his opponents’ remarks of fascism true, citizens of the sunshine state are subject to enduring the chaos and fallout of their representatives' actions. As the clock to the 2024 presidential race counts down, baffling revelations continue to come out of Florida due to DeSantis and his Administration trying to leave an impression on the rest of the nation.
