Former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala gets four years in jail in Disproportionate Assets case

The Special CBI court of Delhi awarded four years imprisonment to former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala in a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case. He is a former Chief minister from the Indian National Lok Dal. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the former chief minister. Special Judge Vikas Dhull also held that Chautala had failed to satisfactorily account for such proportionality by proving his source of income or showing the means by which he acquired assets during the check period (1993-2006).

FIR also stated that the accused accumulated enormous wealth and invested the same in the country in the shape of multi-complexes, hotels, farmhouses, business agencies, petrol pumps, and other investments in foreign countries.

The disproportionate assets were calculated to be Rs. 6,09,79,026 (Rupees Six Crores Nine Lakhs Seventy Nine Thousand and Twenty Six only) and the percentage of the Disproportionate Assets (DA) was 189.11 percent of his known sources of income.

Apart from the filed charge sheet against the minister, the CBI had filed two more charge sheets on both of the sons, Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala, and others being tried separately.

This is Chautala’s second corruption conviction. The Special Public Prosecutor for CBI urged the court to give strict punishment to the convict to send the right message to society.  Chautala was recently released from Tihar Jail on July 2, 2021 from a ten years prison sentence after completing the due formalities. Chautala and 53 others were charged in connection with the JBT teacher’s recruitment scam in 2013. In 2013, the New Delhi court sentenced Chautala and his son Ajay Singh Chautala to ten years imprisonment under various provisions of IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Chautala’s counsel Harsh Kumar Sharma pleaded that the disability of Chautala has increased from 60 percent to 90 percent and he was also suffering from a lung infection. He also told the court that he could not even change his clothes on his own and constantly needed an attendant. The Court has asked the counsel to provide his physical - disability certificate.
