12 days after Donald Trump predicted he would be indicted on March 21st, the Manhattan Grand Jury voted to indict him.
This is the next step in a 5 year investigation by Manhattan District Attorney (DA) Alvin Bragg into the hush money payment made to Stormy Daniels to hide hers and Trump's alleged affair.
We are in uncharted territory since this makes Donald Trump the first president, current or former to face indictment.
The Manhattan Grand Jury came out with indictment late in the afternoon on Thursday, April 30th.
As reported by CNN, the former President faces over 30 counts, the full extent of the charges won’t be known until the indictment is unsealed on Tuesday. Tuesday, April 4th is also the day that Trump is set to surrender to the NYPD. The reason for the delay is because the Secret Service needed the weekend to plan a secure way to move Trump, in and out of a New York City courthouse.
While Trump is now the first President to be indicted, he isn’t the first to have the threats of indictment loom over them.
Richard Nixon was famously pardoned by Gerald Ford for any and all crimes he may have committed during his Presidency. Thus setting the precedent that Presidents are above the law, that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg just broke this week.
Bill Clinton was also facing possible indictment over committing perjury and claiming he never had an affair with Monica Lewinsky. But right before leaving office, Clinton made a deal with the Independent Counsel investigating Clinton for lying under oath and obstructing justice.
Trump responded to the indictment in a statement saying, “This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history.”
Trump has also made a series of posts on Truth Social attacking democrats, the Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg and the judge overseeing his case, Juan Manuel Marchan.
“These Thugs and Radical Left Monsters have just INDICATED the 45th President of the United States of America,” Trump said in one post.
Trump would also post, “The Judge “assigned” to my Witch Hunt Case, a “Case” that has NEVER BEEN CHARGED BEFORE, HATES ME. His name is Juan Manuel Marchan, was hand picked by Bragg & the Prosecutors.”
Some republicans, including Marjorie Taylor Grenne have called for protests on Tuesday for Donald Trump. Because of this and what occurred on January 6, 2021, New York has been preparing for the worst.
