With the Uvalde Texas School Shootings, and The Buffalo New York Mass Shootings, gun violence is one of the major concerns in the United States. While some feel that gun laws must be corrected, others feel that stricter gun laws will do American citizens more harm than good. What can be done to prevent shootings and allow people to maintain possession of their guns?
According to USA Today, on Sunday, June 5th, the city of Philadelphia mourned the loss of six lives while 25 people were reported injured.
There are laws being passed that will make it harder to have access to guns. New York bills[ar1] and members of the Supreme Court are working on stricter laws for citizens to possess guns while conservatives are opposed to tougher gun laws. Conservatives are in favor of American citizens being free to carry weapons. According to CNN, the state of New York has passed several bills within the past few days in response to the massacres. “As the late [conservative] Justice [Antonin] Scalia recognized, the second amendment is not absolute,” Biden said according to The Guardian. “For centuries, states have regulated who may purchase or possess weapons, the types of weapons they may use and the places they may carry those weapons. The courts have upheld these regulations.”Biden also stated.
There are other factors that play into tougher gun laws. Pro-gun organizations such as the NRA have support from Republicans. An article published in The Hill, confirms that the NRA's lobbying power has become more involved in preventing stricter gun laws.
Gun laws are a very controversial subject. Others feel stricter gun laws will prevent mass shootings and killings of others while some people feel restricting gun laws will allow more criminal activity and jeopardize the safety of American citizens. Gun laws should be protected at all cost. After all, we as American citizens have a right to carry guns. We also have a right not to shoot and kill innocent people and cause mass shootings. Shootings must be prevented and not tolerated.
