Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a Missouri woman who convinced her online boyfriend to murder her abusive mother, has been released from prison on parole. Gypsy Rose was found guilty of second-degree murder in 2016, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was eligible for parole after eight.
Dee Dee Blanchard, Gypsy’s mother, had convinced many people that Gypsy was suffering from many serious illnesses like leukemia, muscle dystrophy, epilepsy, and many more. Gypsy Rose did not have any of the diseases her mother portrayed. Munchausen by proxy is a disorder in which a caregiver creates the appearance of illnesses in the victim when they are perfectly healthy. Dee Dee Blanchard had confined Gypsy to a wheelchair for most of her life and had inflicted a great deal of pain against her so she could gain sympathy and attention from the public.
Gypsy Rose met Nicholas Godejohn, her future boyfriend, on an online Christian dating website. They had communicated for two years before they decided to meet in person. After Nicholas learned of the abuse that Gypsy Rose was enduring, the two of them fantasized about killing her mother, never intending to go through with it. However, Gypsy Rose decided that she had enough and she told Nicholas that she wanted her mother dead. Gypsy Rose had given Nicholas everything he needed to murder Dee Dee. Her body was discovered by authorities on June 14, 2015, and had 17 stab wounds.
Officers involved in the investigation initially thought that Gypsy Rose might be injured as well, since she was missing. However, once they found and questioned her, they quickly realized that she had played a part in her mother's death. Gypsy Rose was sentenced to 10 years for second-degree murder, while Nicholas received a life sentence.
Over the past few years, Gypsy Rose has gone on to talk about her abuse and her role in her mother's murder. She has stated that she is relieved to be away from the abuse, but she is not happy her mother is dead. She wishes she had found a different way to remove herself from that situation.
