A hotel located in Cuba in Old Havana named Saratoga Hotel, which was an exclusive five-star hotel, where many tourists resided as it was a historic building and a beautiful sight to see in Old Havana has collapsed. This was a shock to many as it was set to re-open in four days. After the closure due to the Covid pandemic, however, it was also getting renovated. The hotel was in use by the 1930s and its addition of 96 rooms in 2005 when it reopened again. The historic building is a tourist landmark that is admired and visited by the following celebrities Madonna, Beyonce, and Mick Jagger that have stayed there previously.

According to a resident of Old Havana named Yazira de la Caridad “thought the explosion was an earthquake”. Witnesses of this accident have explained to have seen” plumes of black smoke and clouds of dust billowing into the sky following the explosion”. However, the explosion was a gas leak inside the hotel that caused this according to the residents. Thirty were reported to be injured from the explosion that has seen treated in their local hospital since the event today. The president of Cuba Miguel Diaz- Canel has said that “It was not a bomb or an attack, it’s an unfortunate accident”.

Firemen were pulling individuals out of the building and removing “broken granite” and stones to help those affected and help as many individuals as they could. The explosion damaged buses and cars that were surrounding the hotel and the stones reached around 300 feet away from the Saratoga hotel, which shows how extreme the explosion was. It gives a clear picture to those who were not present at the time of how severe it was for the health and lives of the victims. State TV was reporting that it was impossible to tell whether individuals were still trapped inside the hotel unable to get out. The president has taken to Twitter to state the following to its citizens” our deepest condolences and sincere support to the families and friends of the victims”. It was merely an accident, that caused the death of eight individuals in Cuba.
