On Friday, Montana has become the first state in the U.S. to ban TikTok.
This past Friday, Montana passed legislation banning TikTok on all personal devices within state lines and prohibiting all app stores from allowing the app to be downloadable. In fact, as of January 1st, 2024, any app store offering the app to be downloadable is subject to fines of 10k per day.

“ByteDance accelerated globalization with the launch of its global short video product, TikTok. It quickly took off in markets like Southeast Asia, signaling a new opportunity for the company. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in November 2017 and subsequently merged it with TikTok. Today, the TikTok platform, available outside of China, has become the leading destination for short-form mobile videos worldwide.” the statement reads.
In terms of TikTok, ByteDance describes their efforts as a significant success that “supports their mission to inspire creativity and enrich life,” so how can such a seemingly harmless app cause an entire state to ban it completely?
Much of the public and members of Congress have urged the federal government to ban the video app completely. In March of 2023, members of Congress delivered testimony before the, where they put TikTok CEO Shou Zi on the spot.
The app has been accused of security invasions and has caused so much concern that governments have banned the app entirely on work-provided phones in hopes of protecting any data leaks.
The concerts surrounding the Chinese-based app and their lack of personal security have grown so much that Montana has become the first state to ban the app on all devices completely. However, they may not be the last.
