January 6th Hearings Proceed

On January 6th, 2021, the United States was shocked as rioters took over the Capitol. People demanded answers, and now we’re starting to get them. Hearings regarding the insurrection began in June, and now they’re picking up speed again.

One of the most notable moments from the most recent hearing was that a drafted tweet from former President Donald Trump was obtained where he said “I will be making a Big Speech at 10 AM on January 6th at the Ellipse (South of The White House). Please arrive early, massive crowds expected. March to the Capitol after. Stop the Steal!!”. This goes along with what Trump did publicly say, that there would be a big protest on January 6th, and to “Be there, will be wild”. This evidence is huge to the hearings, and indicates something that many believed: that Trump was the leading cause behind the insurrection.

Another piece of this recent hearing was Representative Liz Cheney’s urge against witness swaying or tampering. She revealed that an unnamed witness had gotten a call from Trump, which she did not answer. They told their lawyer, who then alerted the committee in charge of the hearings, which then got passed to the Justice Department. Cheney reminded everyone of the importance of not influencing witnesses.

Additionally, Pat Cipollone was featured quite prominently in the latest hearing. Cipollone was a former White House Counsel member, and testified about the lack of evidence that the 2020 election was stolen. There were videos of him played at the hearing where he states his belief that seizing voting machines is a horrible idea, and that there is no authority to do that.

More evidence that was presented were texts from a former campaign manager. The texts were sent by Brad Parscale, who was texting a former Trump spokesperson that he “felt guilty for helping [Trump] win”. After some reassurance from the person he was texting that he’s been doing the right thing, Parscale said “Yeah. But a woman is dead”. This goes along with the common belief that Trump’s angry rhetoric caused his supporters to go too far, and he’s to blame.

The hearings are to continue this week, as more pieces to the January 6th puzzle come together. After so much turmoil and confusion through the country, it feels remarkable for it to begin to clear up as government leaders from both parties work together to move forward.
