The Associated Press has reported that convicted sports doctor Larry Nassar has been attacked by another inmate at high-security United States Penitentiary Coleman, in Florida. Nassar was stabbed ten times, six times in the back, twice in his neck and twice in his chest, CBS reports. The attack happened at 14:35 EST. This incident happened due to staff shortages affecting the prison Nassar is serving time in.
Nassar is serving time in prison for many counts of sexual abuse. Nassar worked at Michigan State University and at Team USA as a gymnastic team doctor and osteopathic physician. Nassar used the guise of medical treatment to sexually violate the young girls on the team, many of whom were underage. Nassar would perform invasive ‘medical exams’. In some cases, Nassar would penetrate a young woman's anus and vagina with ungloved hands. These ‘medical exams’ were often performed in training camps and hotel rooms.
Over 330 women have come forward with accusations against the disgraced doctor. Most famously, Olympic gold medallists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney have all testified against the doctor.
In 2017, Larry Nasser pleaded guilty to charges of possession of child pornography and tampering with evidence. Nasser was sentenced to 60 years in prison for these charges.
In January 2018, 40 to 175 years were added to his prison sentence after Nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexually assaulting minors.
In 2022, a large group of women who were assaulted by Nassar sued the FBI for $1 billion for mishandling the case. The FBI mishandled allegations made by the women against Nassar. A report released in 2021 by the US justice department’s Office of the Inspector General, found there was overwhelming evidence of disregard of allegations as well as efforts to cover up the case.
Netflix has made a documentary that describes Nassar’s vile crimes, Athlete A, which has only brought more anger and disgrace towards the convicted doctor.
Larry Nassar is currently in hospital recovering from the attack, where he has reportedly suffered a collapsed lung.
