2 days before Christmas, the Mall of America at 7:50 pm initiated a lockdown due to a shooting that led to one death and one injured person. A 19-year-old male was shot multiple times at the Mall of America. There were 16 officers working during the time of the shooting; Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges heard multiple gunshots on the first floor of Nordstrom.

It was announced Friday night that the teenager had died at the scene. Prior to the shooting, there were five to nine individuals involved in a physical altercation, according to Hodges. As a result of the shooting, a bystander was struck by a small bullet in his jacket but did not sustain any injuries.
The shooter has not been arrested and there are currently no suspects in questioning. Hodges made a statement on Friday expressing his determination to find the shooter, “This is just flat-out stupid... We are going to catch you; we’re going to lock you up.”
There have been multiple videos shared on social media of terrified shoppers running from the sound of gunshots to find safety and shelter in stores. The lockdown started at 8:20 pm and has since been lifted after the scene was cleared.

The Mall of America is the nation's largest shopping center and has now had its second shooting this year. The first shooting was held on New Year’s Eve of 2021, two individuals were shot during that shooting.
Saturday morning Governor Tim Walz expressed that “The violence at MOA last night is absolutely unacceptable. We are in touch with local officials to provide the support and resources they need.” Walz is keeping in touch with the officers and the family that lost their child. The Mall of America reopened after Governor Tim Walz's speech, and Nordstrom will remain closed until further notice.
