For those who just cannot get enough of the Mcdonald’s McFlurry, a special surprise is in store. The restaurant chain announced that starting April 12, the new highly anticipated Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry will be available at participating U.S. restaurants nationwide.
This is not an entirely new McFlurry concept, as Singapore was first to experience it where it is sold year-round. Their take on the classic dessert is made with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, and Oreo cookies. However, the stateside version is going to be a little bit different, comprising of McDonald’s signature soft-serve, strawberry flavored clusters, and shortbread cookies.
History of the McFlurry
The sweet treat was originally created by McDonald’s franchisee Ron McLellan in 1995. It is believed that he just threw some candy into a cup of vanilla soft-serve, whipped it up, and then the McFlurry was created. It has since ballooned in popularity, providing people with a delicious, yet affordable dessert. McFlurry’s are now sold in 99 countries, with most places putting a national spin on them. The U.K. for example has recently introduced a limited edition Cadbury Crème egg version for the Easter season.
Some argue the original machines used to create the first McFlurrys no longer exist, and that the new technology that is utilized today isn’t up to the same standards as before. According to the Spinoff, the McFlurry is sort of watered down version of the original More focus nowadays appears to be on the toppings as opposed to the ice cream itself.
McDonald’s spokesperson says the restaurants no longer have the original machines because there was insufficient space to integrate them. The new process, which is still utilized today, involves pouring the soft serve, sprinkling the topping, and then stirring three times to mix.
This gives the McFlurry more of a sundae appearance. In fact, McDonald’s eventually transitioned to a sundae spoon, and then a wooden spoon after that to become slightly more eco-friendly.
Given all of the changes over the years there is one thing that still remains certain. That is the simple fact that people continue to snatch up the sweet treat, and the excitement seems to grow when limited editions are released as well.
