Yesterday, former Metropolitan Police Officer David Carrick just admitted to being a serial rapist who committed a string of sex offences spanning over two decades including 24 counts of rape.
David Carrick is a 48-year-old man who joined the Met in 2001 and later served as a diplomatic protection officer in 2009. Prior to starting his career as a Met Officer in 2001, Carrick served in the Army and was previously known to the police.
During his career as an officer, Carrick was involved in a number of domestic incidents and complaints lodged against him but either his charges were dropped or he was not arrested.
However, Carrick was already arrested and suspended on October 1, 2021, after a brave victim finally came forward.
Carrick eventually pleaded guilty in December 2022 to 43 charges. Afterwards, he admitted to a final six counts on Monday at Southwark Crown Court, bringing the total number of serious offences he pleaded guilty to 49 against 12 women. Many of his crimes between 2003 and 2020 occurred in Hertfordshire where he lived.
The Met has come under criticism for not having done enough and questions are being raised as to how such a demonstrable individual could be allowed to rise through the ranks unchecked.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement posted to Twitter “I am absolutely sickened by the truly abhorrent offences that David Carrick has committed. Serious questions must be answered about how he was able to abuse his position as an officer.”
Facing et Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley apologised to the victims of Carrick and announced that all 45,000 Met officers and staff would be rechecked for previously missed offending.
"We have failed. And I'm sorry. He should not have been a police officer," said the commissioner.
The MET is now investigating 800 officers over 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims according to the Commissioner.
Public trust in the Metropolitan Police has been shaken ever since the death of Sarah Everard at the hands of Wayne Couzens, an off-duty Met officer in 2021. Therefore, this shocking revelation of Carrick’s two-decade crime spree has likely further damaged that trust.
