Mirzapur famed actor Pankaj Tripathi was chosen by the Election Commission of India as the ‘National Icon’ on Monday afternoon, on October 3. He got chosen for this honour after ‘his successful union with ECI in generating awareness amongst voters’.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajiv Kumar made this proclamation in the presence of Pankaj Tripathi himself. Overwhelmed by the announcement, Pankaj Tripathi asserted he was ‘honoured’ by it. While appreciating the actor, CEC further asserted that they selected him as the ‘national icon’ based on his fidelity and dedication to the cause and popularity across the country.
The journey from being a state icon to a national icon
An actor by profession and now EC’s national icon, Pankaj Tripathi shot to fame with the OTT show Mirzapur series. Besides this, he is also known for his works in the films and shows like Sacred Games, Mimi, and Newton among others, and was already acting as a state icon for the ECI.
Tripathi explained that he was thankful to the ECI for picking him up as the National Icon and was humbled to be the first icon from the state of Bihar.
Before being chosen as a national icon, Tripathi served as the state icon of Bihar for the ECI.
“Honourable Election Commissioner Rajiv Sir (Rajiv Kumar) asked me about it. Formalities are yet to be completed through the exchange of emails. I will try my best to do this responsibility with full commitment, ” Tripathi said.
Recalling his time when he voted for the first time, the 46-year-old actor said that the process has not only given him ‘the right of matdaan (voting) but also sammaan (respect) as a contributory voice in democracy. Urging the youth voters the actor reveals how their votes not only help to make democratic choices but also make their voices heard.
Later, CEC and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey also launched a voter awareness radio series in collaboration with All India Radio (AIR).
