In one of the most horrific incidents involving the killing of illegal immigrants, 46 people died, as they suffocated in a truck in the city of San Antonio in the US state of Texas.
Today, Tuesday, the city's fire authorities reported that 46 migrants died inside the truck, while 16 others, including 4 children, were taken to hospital due to signs of exhaustion and severe fatigue due to the heat, after an illegal smuggling trip along the border between Mexico and the United States. .
It also indicated that 3 people were arrested, after the truck was found next to railway tracks in a remote area on the southern outskirts of the city, according to Reuters.
In conjunction with the incident, Mexico's Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, commented on the tragedy, saying in a tweet on Twitter that his country's consulate was following up on the case.
He also added that the truck was carrying an "European Union" plate, and was traveling without supervision, according to him.
In addition, he described the incident as a "Texas tragedy", offering condolences to the families of the victims, although the nationalities of the dead have not yet been officially determined.
On Monday, temperatures in San Antonio, about 160 miles (250 km) from the Mexican border, were recorded at about 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) with high humidity.
It is noteworthy that the past few months have witnessed a remarkable rise in smuggling at the borders between the two countries, which sparked a wave of widespread criticism of the immigration policies adopted by US President Joe Biden.
Such incidents often occur in areas close to the US-Mexico border. In July 2017, police in San Antonio also found the bodies of 10 immigrants inside the trunk of a trailer in the parking lot of a Walmart complex. The driver, James Matthew Bradley, was sentenced the following year to life imprisonment for his role in the fatal smuggling operation.
