Nawab Malik was in judicial imprisonment in connection with a money laundering case involving Dawood Ibrahim until March 21

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik have been sent to judicial custody till March 21, 2022 (Monday) in a money laundering case linked to fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim.

Leader Nawab Malik was brought before the Special PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court earlier in the day by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after his prolonged remand with the central agency.

During the court proceeding, the ED requested that Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik be taken into custody for a few weeks.

Malik filed a petition with the Bombay High Court last week, requesting that the case against him be withdrawn and that the ED proclaim his imprisonment unjustified.

Later, the court requested a response from the central agency and postponed the case until today.

When Malik was arrested on February 23, 2022, he was sent to ED custody till March 3, 2022. This was extended again last week till March 7, 2022.

According to the central agency, the 62-year-old minister used to install bogus occupants on estates purchased with Ibrahim's funds in order to minimize the certification price of land.

Malik said that on the day of his detention, ED agents came into his home and forcibly brought him to their Enforcement Directorate office. There were also rumors that the minister was refusing to cooperate throughout the investigation.

The NCP leader, however, has publicly spoken about not buckling under pressure and fighting the allegations by the ED. "Will fight will win, and will expose everyone," Malik tweeted on February 23, 2022, soon after he was held by the federal agency.

Despite Malik's detention, the political situation in Maharashtra has been hostile, with BJP leaders continually raising the demand on the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi administration to dismiss the minister. In the territory, the NCP is in a partnership with Congress and the Shiv Sena.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has refused to back down from removing Nawab Malik from his cabinet of ministers, and the MVA governing party has backed him nationally.
