In a news conference on January 18, 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “In any arrangement, with a settlement or without it, Israel needs security control over all territory west of the Jordan River this is a necessary condition and it collides with the idea of Palestinian sovereignty.”
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller on January 18, 2024, in his briefing said “There needs to be a political path forward for the establishment of a Palestinian state that is the only way not just to answer the legitimate hopes and aspirations of Palestinian people but it is also the only way to provide lasting security to the Israeli people”
The West Bank is under military occupation by Israel and Gaza has been under blockade imposed by Israel since 2007. Israel has built many illegal settlements that are internationally recognized by the United Nations (UN) as illegal settlements in the West Bank which make a sovereign Palestinian state nearly impossible.
There were efforts by the US to normalize diplomatic relations between Israel and The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after two Gulf states which are the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain normalized relations in 2020. Which might be difficult to achieve after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's news conference.
After the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. which led to the death of about 1200 Israelis according to an article published by The New York Times on November 30, 2023. The civilian casualties in Gaza since the Israeli offensive approached 25,500 according to an article published by the Guardian on January 18, 2024.
Israel has been at war in Gaza for more than 100 days and has not been able to achieve any of its set goals which is destroying Hamas and releasing all hostages. There was a truce to release some hostages in exchange for Israel releasing some of the Palestinian prisoners and allowing humanitarian aides to enter Gaza, the war resumed after it. On January 18, 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a news conference said “I say simply and honestly, victory will take many more months, but we are determined to achieve it”
