Actor Jeremy Renner was dragged under a snow-removal tractor and crushed as he was trying to stop the vehicle from slipping and injuring his grown nephew on New Year's Day.
The 52-year-old "Avengers" actor used a snowcat vehicle, which travels on tracks to extricate his nephew's from the snow, according to the redacted Washoe County Sheriff's Office report submitted on Friday. As the vehicle began sliding sideways Renner was unable to stop the parking brake, which was not applied.
The statement reveals that the nephew was able to help Renner as he awaited for help from an ambulance. As he was airlifted to the hospital, he underwent at least two surgeries and spent more than two weeks getting care in the intensive care unit.
The report also adds that it was not believed that vehicle’s impairment played a role in the incident.
On January 5 Renner told detectives while in the hospital that the incident started on New Year's Day when he towed his nephew's truck out of the actor's driveway after it became stuck in the snow.
The snowplough started "sliding sideways" after dragging the truck into the street, then it started to "roll down the hill," Renner told detectives. It was at that exact moment when he leaped out of the snowcat.
After a neighbour who also happened to be a doctor placed a tourniquet to his leg to halt the bleeding, the actor was airlifted to a hospital close to Reno.
The two-time Oscar nominee revealed last week that he had been released from the hospital and was now healing to his home. On Saturday he disclosed that his mishap caused him to break nearly 30 bones.
Last week, he shared a photo on his Instagram with the words, "Spawned from disaster" for his family, "uniting actionable love," and "New Years incident." He expressed his gratitude and his "love and blessings" for the messages and for thinking about his family.
Several well-known celebrities have submitted letters of support for Renner, including his Marvel co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans.
Chris Hemsworth called Renner a "champion", as well as sending his love. Chris Evans also praised Renner's fortitude and jokingly enquired, "Has anyone even checked on the snowcat?
Renner immediately responded confirming that he had checked on the snow cat and how it needed fuel.
In a recent interview with People, his sister Kym Renner discussed his recovery and said he was making excellent progress. She describes him as a "warrior" who is exceeding all progress milestones in her statement.
All that is left to be done is to wait and see what happens on Renner's rehabilitation journey which we hope can come sooner.
