Joseph Benjamin, a Nollywood actor, singer, and model, shared a narrative of his uphill battle while he was trying to establish himself in the United States of America.
During an interview session with Teju Babyface Oyelakin, a Media personality, Joseph revealed that his American experience turned the way he least expected, and this led him to take up an unexpected role as a taxi driver to cover his expenses.
Mr Benjamin, who relocated to the United States in 2016, said he left the country with the hope to start a movie career abroad. The promising movie gigs he had anticipated turned into disappointment in little or no time, so, it became necessary for him to reassess his options. “I got to America on a promise that I had some gigs waiting for me. So I thought I was going to have a soft landing there. I packed everything from Nigeria, bought a one-way ticket, and came to America.
“Then two days later, the person I was supposed to book a deal with said to me, ‘Those our financiers have pulled out. They have an issue.’ So, I said, what do I do? He said, ‘From next month on, you will have to start paying rent in this house.’ The amount of the one-month rent was equivalent to a one-year rent in Nigeria” said Joseph, as he recollects the trying times. Benjamin recounted engaging in a series of odd jobs, including working in cold storage at Publix and delivering packages using Amazon trucks in addition to his role as a taxi driver to financially get by.
Amazing! Isn't it?
The struggles and hustles of the early days are usually not seen and celebrated but the successes and the wins. Do not despise the days of your little beginning. It is more obvious, real, and important to you than anyone else. If you don’t value and celebrate it, no one else will. This is not necessarily because they are carefree or insensitive but much more. After all, they were not and are not in your shoes. I mean they did not see what you saw, they did not feel what you felt and they do not have everything that made up the uniqueness of your experience.
